Bing Mi Website redesign

BACKGROUND

‘Bing Mi’ is a renowned Portland-based AAPI-owned and operated business that has been serving Chinese Savory Crepes and more for over 9 years. However, the restaurant's website is outdated and does not effectively showcase the menu or atmosphere of the restaurant. Additionally, the website is not mobile-friendly, making it difficult for customers to access important information on the go.

Goals - from bing mi website 1.0 to 2.0

  1. Improve content organization and readability.

  2. Optimize the website for mobile devices.

  3. Maintain design consistency across all pages.

SUMMARY

  • Role: UX Designer, team of 1

  • Timeline: Jan 2023 - Present

  • Process: Research, Design + Ideate, Launch

  • Tools: Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Wix, Notion

1. Research

First, I looked at the past 2 versions of their home page (Version 1, Version 2), did a competitive analysis with other popular food trucks websites in the area, and took notes of pain points that stood out right away.

  1. Content
The website's content could benefit from some reorganization and editing. For example, the text on the homepage is long and difficult to read due to the lack of spacing and large blocks of text. It would be better to break up the content into smaller, easily digestible chunks.

  2. Mobile Optimization
The website does not appear to be optimized for mobile devices. For example, the text on the homepage is small and difficult to read on a smaller screen. It would be important to ensure that the website is optimized for mobile devices to improve the user experience.

  3. Consistency
The website's design is not consistent across all pages. For example, the "Order Online" button on the homepage is red, while the same button on the "Menu" page is green. It would be better to maintain consistency in design elements throughout the website to avoid confusing users.

3. Website Launch + Reflections

Personal reflections

  1. Community Impact: Creating the website for Bing Mi has been a fulfilling experience as it allowed me to contribute to the local community. The restaurant serves as a hub for people to connect over good food, and I'm proud to have played a role in enhancing their online presence.

  2. Awareness of Industry Needs: This project has heightened my awareness of the prevalent need for website updates in various industries. Many mom and pop AAPI businesses in the Portland area can significantly benefit from a modern and user-friendly online presence.

Overall, this project not only showcases my technical skills but also highlights my commitment to user-centered design and collaboration with clients. It's a stepping stone for future endeavors, and I'm excited to continue refining and expanding my portfolio with impactful projects like this one.

Next steps / Opportunities

  1. Monitoring Customer Feedback: With the website live, I am eager to hear feedback from customers. This will provide valuable insights into the user experience and help identify any areas that may need further refinement.

  2. Menu Updates: Recognizing the dynamic nature of the restaurant industry, I continue to work closely with the restaurant owner to keep the menu updated. Regularly refreshing content ensures that visitors get accurate and enticing information about the restaurant's offerings.

  3. Empowering the Owner: One of the key achievements is empowering the owner to manage and update the site independently using Wix. Ongoing training and support will be provided to ensure the owner feels confident in utilizing the platform to keep the website current.
